Welcoming Note by the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee

The 14th Meeting of the Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific (PCGIAP) will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at the Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel from 19 to 22 August 2008. The Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM) is honoured and privileged to play host to this important event.

This meeting would serve as a focal point for a series of related and planned activities as envisaged in the primary aim of the establishment of PCGIAP, which is to maximise the economic, social and environmental benefits of geographic information. It would also provide the opportunity to share and learn more of each other's experience and I am confident that everyone will benefit tremendously from this gathering.

The Programme has been tentatively outlined as follows:

On the first day of the Meeting, i.e. 19 August 2008, registration of delegates, Official Opening Ceremony and a Seminar on Land Administration will take place. This will be followed by a Welcome Reception in the evening and an Official Welcoming Dinner.

On the second day, the continuation of the Seminar on Land Administration, commencement of Workshop on Asia and Pacific Metadata Profile and start of Plenary Session of the 14th PCGIAP Meeting.

On the third day, Working Group Parallel Sessions are planned as well as the continuation of the Seminar on Land Administration. There will also be a technical tour arranged for the delegates that will take them to some of the most interesting places in the city.

And finally, Plenary Sessions including reports from Working Groups, resolutions for the next Meeting and Closing Speech by the President of the PCGIAP will be on the last day. The Executive Board Meeting will be held following the adjournment of the PCGIAP Meeting.

I look forward to meeting you in Kuala Lumpur.
